On Saturday, March 7th, 2026, the Atlanta Archdiocese Council of Catholic Women honored the Women of the Year from each Parish in the Archdiocese. Sacred Heart’s Woman of the Year is Mary Short.
Mary is a very busy parishioner at Sacred Heart. At the request of our pastor, Fr. Bryan Kuhr, Mary started the “Walking with Moms in Need” ministry. Walking with Moms in Need is a nationwide, parish-based initiative to increase support for pregnant and parenting mothers in need. It works to ensure that any woman who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant, or parenting in difficult circumstances, can turn to her local Catholic Church and be connected with the resources she needs. Volunteers walk with Moms throughout the motherhood journey, offering them authentic Christian friendship and ongoing support. Mary goes above and beyond to actually walk with these moms. If Mary finds out there is a need in the home beyond what Walking with Moms in Need can provide, she does her best to fill the need by reaching out to parishioners and other organizations that may be able to assist. Through the ministry, Mary helps the moms she assist feel secure in raising their babies. She has welcomed a group of volunteers who have enabled the ministry to grow! Walking with Moms in Need’s latest project is a “fair” to instruct Moms where to go for additional help in different areas such as employment or continuing their education.
This year’s event was held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sandy Springs. The event started with a beautiful Mass presided over by the Most Reverend Bernard “Ned” Shlesinger, III, Auxilary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Many other priests from the Archdiocese were in attendence. St. Joseph’s choir contributed to the mass with a beautiful ensemble of music. Following the Mass there was a reception honoring all of the Women of the Year. Cake and punch were served.
The Sacred Heart Council of Catholic Women is truly grateful for the efforts of Mary Short within our Parish! Congratulations Mary! The honor is well deserved!
